Mountain Castle Diorama (2022)

This was the second project I completed during my last semester of 3D art at FIEA. For this piece, in addition to the regular tasks of 3D art, we were also required to do an additional research component - to learn how to use an external program, and integrate it into our project. Since I'm primarily an environmental artist, I decided I would choose World Machine. Influenced by a piece of 2D art I found (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/3ov8Og), I decided to create a model of a castle sitting on a mountain. The idea of this project was to create a little self-contained environment contained in a little base, to make a diorama of sorts. So, I learned some basic skills in World Machine to create a fitting mountain for my castle to sit on. The castle itself was a fairly standard 3D model, though it had to be set up right to make sure it integrated with the mountain well enough. For the purposes of texturing the model, I created a few tiling textures for the castle - two variants of a tiling brick texture for the walls, and a roof tile texture for the roofs. When time came to bring it into Unreal, I brought in some simple rocks and grasses I had created for previous projects in order to add a little more visual variety, and to partially hide the seams between the castle and mountain. For a week by week breakdown of how this model developed, including a presentation about how I used World Machine, visit the following posts at my FIEA art blog.
